Molecular Dynamics of Thermocapillary flows Molecular Dynamics of Thermocapillary flows Dr Michael Frank from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, is using ARCHIE-WeSt to investigate the behaviour of fluid mixtures in the presence of a temperature gradient. More specifically, our goal is to study the Marangoni effect, i.e. flow induced due to a gradient in surface tension between the different fluids of the mixture, which finds application in space engineering. We are using Molecular Dynamics simulations, in an attempt to understand the asymptotic behaviour of the phenomenon as systems scale down to nano-meter sized characteristic dimensions. Finally, we want to understand how properties, such as miscibility or partial miscibility, affect the flow dynamics of the system.
