Potential output of the project:

Research Paper.
The primary aim of the project is to develop rheological models for granular materials that consist of non-spherical particles. Modifications have been made in several aspects of the currently distributed version of LAMMPS, including modifications to boundary conditions, contact models as well as pressure and temperature calculations and these modifications have all been thoroughly tested. These modifications will allow us to improve on current rheological models that have been developed for granular materials consisting of spherical particles to include the effect of particle shape. In conjunction with the rheological modelling the microstructural analysis performed on the results will provide valuable insight as to the underlying reasons behind the unusual behaviours that granular materials exhibit. As such the potential output of the project will likely be two high impact research papers.
The study will require several hundred jobs that each consist of several individual simulations. Each simulation of will require approximately 20 cores and will run between 1 and 12 hours. The output of each simulation produces files that contain information about individual particles in a simulation as well as macroscopic data such a pressure and temperature. This output is typically between 1 and 5Gb of data depending on the specific simulation. So, for each individual job this will result in approximately 50Gb of data and require around 1000 CPU hours.
