Control or Mitigation of the Turbulence Generated by Marine Control Surface

Dr Weichao Shi, in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is using ARCHIE-WeSt to investigate control or mitigation of the turbulence generated by marine control surfaces. This project is to research the feasibility of developing novel mechanisms (retrofitting biomimetic flow conditioning devices) or strategies (best practice) enable the control and/or mitigation of a marine control surface’s turbulence without compromising its functionality. Marine control surfaces, like rudders, bow-planes, etc., play a critical role in the manoeuvring of the most kinds of marine vehicles, while it also contributes to the generation of turbulent wake and underwater radiated noise. This project is going to combine the state-of-the-art experimental marine hydrodynamic test with high fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulation using ARCHIE-WeSt to evaluate and optimise the design of marine control surfaces or provide best practise to operate these control surfaces in order to control and mitigate its turbulent wake structure and its associated acoustic signature.
